First American magazines were published in 1741. Philadelphia printers Andrew Bradford and Benjamin Franklin, who owned rivaling newspapers, both raced to publish the first American magazine.
Bradford ultimately claimed the honor by publishing American Magazine first. Benjamin Franklin’s General Magazine was published three days later. Neither magazine met with much success: Bradford’s publication folded after three months, and Franklin’s lasted only six months. magazines became incredibly popular in America. By the end of the 18th century, there were more than 100 magazines in the United States. Some of the most influential were Pennsylvania Magazine by Thomas Paine and the Massachusetts Magazine.
Early Magazines ere to expensive for the poor so magazines were mostly geared toward learned cultured, and sophisticated individuals. 1830's magazines for public began to emerge and focused on amusement and entertainment more. Literary review magazines became popular during the 1800's. Founded in 1818 the Journal of Science was One of the first specialized publications in America. Early magazines bought at newsstands. Gradually, companies began distributing their magazines by subscription which guaranteed that the subscriber would receive each new issue of the publication.

Blogs, text comments, emails and your own pictures from your mobile are something the magazines promote. It allows the reader and magazine to relate. Through these information, the magazines grasp a better understand of their viewers and publish more relatable content. Critics believe that this is dumbing down the content, making some magazines uninteresting and lacking originality. Technology allows the readers to have more control over what they read by creating their own content, especially on magazine websites.
