Blog #22 - The importance of costumes and props

There are many prominent names among fans of the genre of fashion and clothing that i have chosen, so i chose some key pieces that the model could wear and try out. They already own these types of clothing, so i will not need to go and shop for these pieces. With the typical target audience of my magazine being those who loves fashion and keeping up with the latest trends i needed to think about the typical things someone would wear.

Something to note is that some fashion magazines may overlap with other genres like rap and sports.
My magazine represents particular social groups through the props and costumes. For props a Gold chain is sometimes used which represents the rap genre. I might also used a snap back to represent social groups, this is because most rap social groups wear these sort of accessories, it shows 'coolness', it makes the males feel superior and dominant to other groups because of what they wear and how they wear it.

Blog # 21- Audience research

All media products have an intended target audience. I did some research for this task as it's important to have a background knowledge of existing brands and their audiences.
I am aiming toward people with more mainstream fashion sense. So fashion trends that were taken over by most people ages 16 - 25. As well as being interested in reflecting on fashion trends. Also people who are interested in keeping up with the latest trends.

Type of clothing might be too explicit for younger audience, so ages 16- 25 is great because they're more adults so content wouldn't fir their age, and there would be less judgement if a 20 year old is wearing a more explicit piece of clothing instead of a 12 year old. My target gender audience is both male and female and my magazine will be mainly on fashion trends and their common interests would be fashion or celebrities fashion.

I decided to challenge the stereotypes of indie audiences slightly and widen the age bracket to include younger people as I feel like the representation of artists in my magazine will interest them. Also, because they are likely to have a highly disposable but limited income. The younger demographic may be influenced by older audiences to buy this magazine and aspire to be them.

Blog #20 Fashion Magazine history

The first notion of fashion magazines began with the courts of aristocracy recording information about what they were wearing. In the late 1600s and 1700s. French women and dressmakers outside of the court, relied on sketches to see what was being worn. The sketches were complies in books that were reproduced and sold. By the 1780s. the French court had a number of journals circulated. By the 1900s, fashion magazines began to feature photography and nine years later Conde Nast purchased Vogue. from 1912 - 1925, La Gazette du Bon ton was the leading French fashion magazine by subscription only, for 100 francs a year. The magazine aimed to publish fashion as art alongside paintings, sculptures and drawings. According to the magazine's first editorial, "the clothing of a woman is a pleasure to the eye that cannot be judged inferior to other arts".

1916 - Nast created Vogue UK and Paris editions.

1920 - American fashion magazines expanded their content to feature journalism articles about women's sufferage and socialites.

1930 - GQ and esquire began covering men's fashion

1940 - American fashion magazines feature articles about working women fashion.

Vogue started off as a weekly newspaper in 1982. The first issue was published on December 7th. In 1902 Conde Nast purchased vogue and gradually grew the publication and eventually changed it to a unisex magazine. by 1911, the vogue brand required a reputation for catering to an elite audience.
In July 1932, American vogue placed its first first colour photograph. 1988, showed Anna Wintour being named editor - in - chief.

Bazar magazine was first published in 1867 by Harper brothers. When the magazine began, it was a tabloid size newspaper that catered to women in the middle and upper classes. It showcased fashion from Germany and Paris in a newspaper design format. It wasn't until 1901 that it moved to a monthly issued magazine which it maintains today. For the first 50 years of distribution Bazaar's covers were illustrated. In 1970 it expanded to Australia and the UK.

Blog #19- Researching Magazine Genres

Elements all of the magazine covers have in common are that they all have the same conventions such as a masthead, main image, etc.

Depending on the magazine genre, the magazine covers differ. For example, the fashion magazines have more cover lines opposed to food magazines with limited cover lines and more focus on images.

Out of all the examples, the most aesthetically pleasing in my opinion is the fashion magazines because they attract the attention of the audience and cause you to have a certain interest in the type of clothing models and celebrities wear what they're showing, so I plan on doing this

Blog #17 - History of magazines

What Are Magazines
Magazines are publications, usually periodical publications, that are printed or published electronically. They are generally published on a regular schedule and contain a variety of content. They are generally financed by advertising, by a purchase price, by prepaid subscriptions, or a combination of the three.

History Of Magazines
First American magazines were published in 1741. Philadelphia printers Andrew Bradford and Benjamin Franklin, who owned rivaling newspapers, both raced to publish the first American magazine.
Bradford ultimately claimed the honor by publishing American Magazine first. Benjamin Franklin’s General Magazine was published three days later. Neither magazine met with much success: Bradford’s publication folded after three months, and Franklin’s lasted only six months. magazines became incredibly popular in America. By the end of the 18th century, there were more than 100 magazines in the United States. Some of the most influential were Pennsylvania Magazine by Thomas Paine and the Massachusetts Magazine.
Early Magazines ere to expensive for the poor so magazines were mostly geared toward learned cultured, and sophisticated individuals. 1830's magazines for public began to emerge and focused on amusement and entertainment more. Literary review magazines became popular during the 1800's. Founded in 1818 the Journal of Science was One of the first specialized publications in America. Early magazines bought at newsstands. Gradually, companies began distributing their magazines by subscription which guaranteed that the subscriber would receive each new issue of the publication.

Reflection

Blogs, text comments, emails and your own pictures from your mobile are something the magazines promote. It allows the reader and magazine to relate. Through these information, the magazines grasp a better understand of their viewers and publish more relatable content. Critics believe that this is dumbing down the content, making some magazines uninteresting and lacking originality. Technology allows the readers to have more control over what they read by creating their own content, especially on magazine websites.
